About BVI Sailing Coach
BVI Sailing Coach is a premier sailing and powerboat school in the heart of the British Virgin Islands, one of the world’s top sailing destinations. We train first-time sailors and experienced boaters alike to skipper independently, with the skills, judgment and confidence to take command.
Everything we teach points to one goal: helping you become your own captain. Through hands-on instruction, modern yachts and personalized coaching, we prepare you to take full responsibility for a vessel: planning passages, managing crew, handling real situations and making sound decisions. Whether you want to charter, own a yacht or cruise internationally, our training gives you true independence on the water.
Our Sailing and Powerboat School
We teach on monohulls, catamarans and power catamarans, with a strong emphasis on practical seamanship. Training covers navigation, boat handling under sail and power, anchoring and mooring, docking in tight marinas, weather awareness, passage planning and risk-aware decision-making.
The BVI is an ideal classroom. Steady trade winds, protected waters, short passages and busy charter anchorages let you practice the exact skills you need to charter on your own. You train in real charter scenarios, not just controlled exercises, so the confidence carries straight into your own cruising.
Certification and Bareboat Readiness
Our courses follow US Sailing and US Powerboating standards and are also available through NauticEd. The organizations differ, but all three pathways lead to the same outcome: bareboat charter certification.
US-Sailing
Our sailing courses follow US Sailing standards and are taught hands-on on monohulls and catamarans. US Sailing is the national governing body of the sport in the United States, and its certifications are respected across the sailing and charter industry. They are designed to build capable sailors, not just to complete a course.
US-Powerboating
Our powerboat courses follow US Powerboating standards and are taught hands-on aboard a power catamaran. You’ll practice docking, anchoring, mooring, twin-engine handling and passage planning, and finish with a certification that charter companies recognize.
All of our instructors are SafeSport certified through the U.S. Center for SafeSport. The training covers professionalism, harassment prevention and abuse awareness, helping keep the learning environment safe and respectful for every student on board.
These certifications are accepted by charter companies worldwide and show that you’ve met the training and experience requirements to charter a yacht independently. We go beyond the minimum: our goal is real competence, so you’re not just certified but prepared to take command.
